<br />
<br />
After an interesting and yet quiet year, our hometown favorites have reemerged stronger than ever. 2013 proved to be quite a time of trials and tribulations for the band stemming from a series of unfortunate....yet fortunate events. Syndicate 51 formed in 2012. The group came together as a collaboration for another artist and had an instant chemistry beyond the intent of the original meeting purpose. Its a fairytale band story of the right people being connected at the right time. Compared to the likes and sounds of Imagine Dragons, Linkin Park, The Roots, The Neighbourhood and Black Eye Peas the fusion of hip hop, alternative rock with a reggae undertone proved to be something with significant potential. Needless to say, after playing a few gigs on behalf of the artist that brought the core of this band together, there was an undeniable cosmic evolution taking place.... after deciding to take their sound full speed in another direction, slightly opposite of what brought them together.... Syndicate 51 was born.<br />
<br />
<br />
<strong>The Trials....</strong><br />
<br />
Over the past year, There was a loss of a couple of band members however the founding core, Steven Bratland, Benjamin Bloom and Meosha Eaton remained at the foundations adhesive. The life changing events stemming from suddenly having to take<br />
<a name='more'></a>care of an ill parent, to welcoming a new baby into the family and world and to an unexpected growth surge in a family ran business would seem on the surface to present an instant conflict of interest. A major challenge to say the least to already working adults leading full time lives with a full time commitment to a newly formed band. Most average human beings NOT living 100% of the time as a musician/band member, would walk away and let it all fall to the way side....not SYNDIATE 51....!!!! Though the changes involved posed some challenges for regularly scheduled practices and performances it also served as a time for others (ex) members to decide if this was something they were really wanting to continue on with. Out of the original 5, 2 went in other directions but are still avid supporters of S51's sound and goals.<br />
<br />

<br />
<br />
<strong>The Victories....</strong><br />
<br />
The year allowed the band to regroup and really focus on a new revised plan to include series of tactics and stunts we will all soon be privies to. This hiatus also allowed them to intricately dissect what they had come up with and out of the tons of material created and recorded during 2012-2013 and focused on 3 carefully selected singles to begin the reconstruction. During that time, the vision was also kept alive and well through organized photo shoots, band meetings, and constant discussion and collective focus on what the future holds. Nonetheless, from what I've had the opportunity to preview the engineering, producing, vocals, overall musicianship and fluidity is spectacular to say the least!! <strong>A BAND THAT DREAMS TOGETHER...STAYS TOGETHER</strong>!! A true delight in the world of Alternative Hip Hop/Indie Rock. Be sure to listen free on <a href="http://www.reverbnation.com/syndicate51">www.reverbnation.com/syndicate51</a> <br />

The Digital Age. Surely, more than a few record execs have wept mulling over that phrase. Streaming services and YouTube are taking over. One-hit wonders of past generations have sold more albums than some of today's biggest artists. Yup, the times are a-changing. But you know what's standing firm in the midst of all this piracy bullsh-t? Live music.
It's irreplaceable in our opinion. Even with your fancy 3D, HD TVs and your thundering surround sound, it doesn't matter. Seeing music live is THE epitome of the music experience.
And thanks to our culture's evolving tastes, you can go to a festival and experience your favorite playlist in person over the course of a couple days. It's pretty incredible.
But there are hundreds of festivals in the U.S. every year -- how does one possibly choose?! Guys, calm down. We go to <a href="http://fuse.tv/festivals" style="color: #7b01c1; text-decoration: none;" target="_blank" title="Festivals">festivals</a> all the time, so we've learned a thing or two about their pros and cons and assembled this must-see list (laid out in chronological order).
They're all known for booking stellar lineups, so we've pulled out some telling details about each festival's atmosphere and vibe. Whether you wanna shake your ass in furry boots, mosh away your high school drams or just chill out with 80,000 new friends on a beautiful summer night, your dream festival awaits you.

So in my digging....and curiosity....this is what Wikepedia has indicated:<br />
<br />
<br />
Cover artwork
Further information: List of images on the cover of Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club BandThe gatefoldThe Grammy Award-winning <b>album packaging was art-directed by Robert Fraser, designed by Peter Blake and Jann Haworth, his wife and artistic partner, and photographed by</b> <b>Michael Cooper</b>. It featured a colourful collage of life-sized cardboard models of famous people on the front of the album cover and the lyrics printed in full on the back cover, the first time this had been done on a rock LP.[30] In the guise of the Sgt. Pepper band, the Beatles were dressed in custom-made military-style outfits made of satin dyed inday-glo colours. The suits were designed by Manuel Cuevas.[31] Among the insignia on their uniforms are: MBE medals on McCartney's and Harrison's jackets, the Royal Coat of Arms of the United Kingdom on Lennon's right sleeve and an Ontario Provincial Police flash on McCartney's sleeve.<br />
<br />
The inner sleeveIn the centre of the cover, the Beatles stand behind a drum on which are painted the words of the album's title; the drum was painted by fairground artist Joe Ephgrave.[32] The collage depicted around <b>60 famous people</b>, including writers, musicians, film stars, and (at Harrison's request) a number of Indian gurus. The final grouping included Marlene Dietrich, Carl Gustav Jung, W.C. Fields, Diana Dors, Bob Dylan, Issy Bonn, Marilyn Monroe, Aldous Huxley, Karlheinz Stockhausen, <b>Sigmund Freud, Aleister Crowley,</b> T. E. Lawrence, Lewis Carroll, Edgar Allan Poe, Karl Marx, Sir Robert Peel, Oscar Wilde, H. G. Wells, Marlon Brando, Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy, and Lenny Bruce.[33] Also included was the image of the original Beatles' bassist, the late Stuart Sutcliffe.<br />
<br />
Pete Best said in a later NPR interview that Lennon borrowed family medals from his (Best's) mother Mona for the shoot, on condition that he did not lose them. <b>Adolf Hitler and Jesus Christ were requested by Lennon, but ultimately they were left out.</b>[34] A photo also exists of a rejected cardboard printout with a cloth draped over its head; its identity is unknown. The final cost for the cover art was nearly £3,000 (equivalent to £40,606 today) an extravagant sum for a time when album covers would typically cost around £50.[35]<br />

I still don't feel satisfied with how and why they chose the individuals they did.....did they perhaps want to stir controversy...? Eventually I will have a chance to ask Paul myself at some point. If you guys have any ideas or perhaps know a little bit more about one of the world's greatest bands, i'd surely appreciate it if you share your knowledge or "as the story goes..." version.<div class="blogger-post-footer">Www.reverbnation.com/syndicate51 </div>Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14320286325556704972noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-61916093610576379.post-48238528515629386042013-03-24T12:23:00.002-07:002013-03-24T12:24:03.890-07:00Bob Marley - New Zealand Interview, 1979 - posted by Meosha<iframe width="420" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/OsfYAJ3dQyY" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

I’ve been listening to a lot of The Roots lately. Watching them on their plush day job on the Jimmy Fallon show and seeing Questlove’s name appear everywhere in the world of music, it’s easy to forget that the The Roots were once a young hungry band. That they’ve been together a good 25 years (formed in 1987!), and have stayed on top of their game for all this time, is huge testament to their musicianship and originality.</p>
<p>So here’s a live version of “Proceed” from their second studio album and major label debut, 1995’s “<i>Do You Want More?!!!??!” </i>with Leonard Nelson Hubbard rocking the catchy-as-hell bass line, and beatboxer Rahzel on the intro.</p>
<p>"<i>Do You Want More?!!!??!</i>” That’s a rhetorical question right? Well, the answer is "Yes!" (and thank you Roots for providing more and more and more . . .)</p>

Sometimes we forget how important it is to make time for such exercises on a daily basis. It's no different than any other skill or ability that takes maintenance and practice, especially for those of us that are singing and performing for a potential living. I am not a lead singer, but as a rap vocalist and back up singer, I too must incorporate such practices as habit to protect, maintain and grow my vocal abilities. As a student of vocal training I can tell you it's definitely work!!! But even the BEST makes time for practice.... which ultimately makes perfect!! Here are some helpful tips from John Henny's article on top exercises for vocal health posted on www.backstage.com .<br /><br/>
<a href="http://cdn-media.backstage.com/files/media/stylus/78951-VocalEase.jpg.300x207_q100.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="Top 10 Exercises for Your Vocal Health" border="0" height="219" src="http://cdn-media.backstage.com/files/media/stylus/78951-VocalEase.jpg.300x207_q100.jpg" style="border-bottom-style: none; border-color: initial; border-left-style: none; border-right-style: none; border-top-style: none; border-width: initial; width: 275px;" width="320" /></a>
<span style="color: #333333; font-family: NGRegular, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 15px;"></span>
1. Glides Through a Straw Blow air through a small stirring straw while phonating glides up and down through your range. The backpressure created by the resistance of the straw presses down on the vocal cords and helps decrease puffiness, a major source of vocal trouble.<br />
<br />
2. Lip Trills
This is a variation of the straw exercise. Gently blow air through closed lips, keeping them relaxed, and sing an uh vowel underneath. Your lips should start to trill. The resistance of the bubbling<br />
<a name='more'></a>lips helps maintain cord closure, an important element of good singing.<br />
<br />
3. Creaky Doors
This is a great exercise to help build the coordination needed to maintain proper cord closure. Make a little edgy sound, like a creaky door or a rusty gate opening. Do a scale on this sound using very little air. The idea is to not let the sound get breathy or squeezed.<br />
<br />
4. Ngs
Make the ng sound from the word hung. This sound is produced with the tongue and soft palate together. This again provides backpressure, while also making the transition between the lower and upper registers (chest voice and head voice) easier.<br />
<br />
5. Nasty Nays
This is done using the word nay on a bratty or Wicked Witch–type sound. This exercise also assists in cord closure, while the exaggerated sound makes it easier to ascend into the upper register without cracking or flipping.<br />
<br />
6. Hooty Gees
This is the opposite of the previous exercise, and it's quite useful for a singer experiencing excess tension. Using a dopey cartoon voice (think Yogi Bear), say the word gee. You should feel your larynx drop. The g consonant should also help with cord closure due to the backpressure it creates, so you can experience accessing the upper register with a stable larynx and closed cords. This coordination is extremely important in good, healthy singing. Once this exercise is comfortable, you can drop the dopey imposition and sing on a more natural sound.<br />
<br />
7. Coo Coos
This exercise is great for working the upper register. The coo can be made to sound hooty, like an owl, for extra ease in working high notes.<br />
<br />
8. Aahs
This is very useful for singers who are weak or breathy in their lower register. The sound is on the aah of cat and can be exaggerated by sticking the tongue out slightly. Do this in your lower register in a five-tone scale (1–2–3–4–5 to 5–4–3–2–1 of the major scale). Use very little air, as you don't want any breathiness in the sound.<br />
<br />
9. Googs and Mums
These are best used once the voice is experiencing proper cord closure and ease of production. The word goog (the vowel sounds like the oo in good) has both a hard consonant for cord closure and a vowel that will help stabilize the larynx. Be sure to maintain the vowel in the upper register, as vowel widening (gaag) can cause tension. The vowel and consonant of mum provide a bit less help than goog, making this a slightly more advanced exercise.<br />
<br />
10. Ooh-Oh-Uh-Ahs
Going from a more closed or narrow vowel to a wider one on a sustain is a great way to balance resonance. The more closed vowel will help you get into your upper register. Gradually open to the wider vowel while keeping the resonance in the same place. If the tone gets shouty or strained, go back to the narrow vowel to get the voice balanced again.<br />

<br />
One of the best things about playing in a band is that there are no rules.
In hindsight there are mistakes, and I've made plenty.
I've also learned from them an<br />

<b><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">Top 10 Tips for Playing in a Band
</span></b></div>
</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
Don't let any of this put you off; none of this is rocket science, just common-sense.
Remember, these aren't rules, just ideas to think about.
Maybe some will work for you and some won't.
Maybe some could if you tried them.
<br />
<br />
<table border="0" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" style="width: 100%px;">
<tbody>
<tr><td class="section" valign="bottom">1.<b> Be on a Winning Team
</b></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
A band is about working and playing together, so being a good player is fine, but unless you're so phenomenally brilliant that you're in constant demand (sorry, but most of us are not), then it's actually more important to know how to work in a team of people.
<br />
Some artists think its cool to be temperamental (half temper and half mental!), but you're making your own life harder than it needs to be if you put up with these people in your band, or even worse, if you're one yourself.
Working in a good team can be fantastic (you know: the power of the team is greater than the sum of its individuals).
You can get a real buzz when you pull off a successful gig together.
In the band, it benefits you, as a band member, to leave space for others to grow, learn and make mistakes.
<br />
<br />
<table border="0" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" style="width: 100%px;">
<tbody>
<tr><td class="section" valign="bottom">2. <b>Know the People"
</b></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
Working with people outside the band is also important - know your agents, promoters, employers (the ones who pay you) and your customers (the ones you're playing to).
Find out what they want, and treat them as people.
Understand that your average (non-musician) audience will notice more than your music alone.
<br />
<strong>In this order</strong>, your average audience will notice:
<br />
<ol>
<li>Firstly, your presentation - how you do what you do</li>
<li>You're appearance - what you look like</li>
<li>Lastly, your music - what you sound like</li>
</ol>
This is a very uncomfortable concept for many musos.
The only way to make your music more noticeable is to be exceptionally brilliant, or exceptionally bad.
<br />
<br />
Don't despair; performing music live is just a package deal.
Don't kid yourself either, that when you play people somehow switch onto a principle that your music is everything, and everything else is nothing.
<br />
<br />
More importantly music, like all art forms, is about giving.
I think the way to enhance the perception of your music is to combine the above three elements into your performance.
If you really like the music you play, you'll find it easy to get into the feel of the songs, and that affects the way you look on stage, and allows you to present your music by giving something of yourself by expressing your feelings in a musical form, and making it real and credible experience for yourself and your audience.
<br />
<br />
This becomes a controversial topic when we stray into less credible musical territory.
For example, if your entire audience pleads with you to play The Chicken Dance, would you play it? If not, why not? Would you be concerned about what other band members might think of you and how it might affect your credibility or reputation? Or is it your own pride telling you not to play anything musically trite? Are you above this sort of thing? Even if you never play The Chicken Dance it might be interesting for you to honestly answer some of these questions for yourself.
<br />
<br />
Then there's the show-band field, where presentation and appearance is intentionally the main focus of the performance.
Whether its a Grease revival or your own concept, it usually requires some theatrics and dressing up.
This can be a genuine additional artistic outlet for those with acting and dramatic skills, although I think it can be a minefield for musicians who do not have this flair.
It again raises questions of credibility and musical integrity.
<br />
<br />
For what its worth, I recently played 2 shows in a row with the same lineup of musos.
The first night was a birthday party, all aged around mid forties.
They wanted 70's classics; rock, soul and a dash of blues, which we played.
Next night we played at a wedding with ages from teenagers through to 60 year olds.
It took us about set to figure it out, but they loved the old corny sing-along hits (like "Singin' the Blues", "Runaway", "Personality" and so on).
<br />
<br />
Now in my view, what we played the first night had a fair amount of musical credibility, while the second night did not.
Nevertheless, our audiences loved the band on both nights, and we will get repeat work out of both shows.
I choose to have a great night every night, and enjoy whatever I play, and these 2 nights were no exception.
<br />
<br />

<tbody>
<tr><td class="section" valign="bottom">3. <b>Practice, practice, practice!
</b></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
Tedious, yes.
Rewarding, yes.
When I was a boy (get the violins ready!) learning my music was a challenge.
My music teachers taught Beethoven and Mozart, because they believed this was the only real music.
Even the cheapo guitars I practiced with were almost unplayable.
<br />
<br />
Today, every music magazine is packed with playing tips and ideas for every music style you could want.
There are instructional videos, YouTube and a wealth of web resources and cheap guitars are excellent value and very playable.
<br />
<br />
So practice, look, learn, listen, read, question, experiment.
If you haven't made ten mistakes today, you're not trying hard enough!
<br />
<br />
<table border="0" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" style="width: 100%px;">
<tbody>
<tr><td class="section" valign="bottom">4. <b>Know the Songs
</b></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
There's more to learning a song than working out the chords, solos and lyrics.
Know what the songs you play are about, and play something to enhance or create the right mood and tell the story.
<br />
You already have the tools at your disposal to create the mood, and make each song unique.
Use your effects and techniques to advantage.
Obvious effects are good for short periods; subtle effects are good for long periods.
<br />
<br />
Some examples of obvious effects and techniques are: using a loud echo repeat, a wah pedal, playing with lots of dive-bomb harmonics, or playing a continuous stream of notes without a pause.
These can be very effective when used occasionally and briefly, otherwise they can become tiring to listen to.
If you set your effects so you can only just tell they're on, you can use them for a long time to add subtle textures to your music.
<br />
<br />
<table border="0" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" style="width: 100%px;">
<tbody>
<tr><td class="section" valign="bottom">5<b>. Don't Blame
</b></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
Don't blame ...<br />
... your audience if they don't dance<br />
... your audience if they don't applaud<br />
... your employer if you don't get booked again<br />
... your agent if he can't find the work you want<br />
... other band members when things go wrong<br />
... your engineer when you can't hear yourself<br />
... your equipment when it fails<br />
... your partner when you've had a rough gig<br />
... life in general
<br />
<br />
All of these and more will happen over and over again in your career, and guess what?
Blaming makes every one of them worse for you.
Every one of these situations is solvable with a positive and philosophical attitude.
So use every disappointment as an opportunity to learn to relax (relax I said!, now!), and think calmly about how you can do things differently next song or show.
<br />
